Earlier today, a pensioner leafleting in the Bath area for the Brexit Party was accosted by a local nutter, leaving her shaken up and distraught. We have checked and she’s perfectly fine, thankfully. What follows is her story of what happened today:
After dropping leaflets in several roads, a chap runs out of his house shouting “I don’t want this. Come here and take it back.” I said quite politely “That’s fine, just bin it.” “No”, he screams, “come back here and take it away. I don’t want it in my house. I sent your party’s last leaflet back and I’m legally entitled to ask you to come and take this away!”
I ignored him and carried on leafletting, so he ran up the street at me, shouting and waving the leaflet above his head. He got up to me and squared up to me, stood in front of me shouting, “Take it!”, repeatedly.
I told him that I had a phone on me and if he took one more step towards me, I would ring the police. “Go on then!”. He starts ranting while still blocking my path.
This is in a quiet estate of middle-class houses. So I got my phone out and started to video him. He starts chanting, “you’re a very sad person”, and, “what’s wrong with you?” I said, “get out of my way or I will consider this harassment and interference in the electoral process.” He then steps out of the way.
I walked away, still videoing him. Then his wife opened the front door and starts chanting, “Milkshake! Milkshake!” at me. I have been saying for over a year that it’s not safe to campaign.
I’m only a bit shaken up, but I’m more angry that a person like that thinks that it’s okay to harass people exercising their democratic right. I’m 5’3″ and of pension age!
